1975 Poggio alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

What a turn up! Inauspicious start when the gloopy, saturated cork shot down the neck at the slightest contact. But the wine was in great nick. Dark red fruit, stewed cranberry, and a bucketful of well-defined tertiary notes. Mulchy leaves, deep caramel, espresso, mocha, really fresh sweet liquorice and cracked leather. Inviting, vibrant and energetic. Tarter and more lean on the palate but perfectly enjoyable- subtly persistent, some powdery tannins remain. Great experience.

Floral on the nose with loads of savouriness. Pot pourii maybe. Dried blackberry too. Similar on the palette with also some dried plum. All there on the palette. Good complexity and enough structure to suggest a decent future.

Drank over two days. Two hour double decant having been stood up for a week. Ullage between bottom neck and upper top shoulder. Cork in pristine condition and very fine sediment. Clearly a very well cellared bottle. A medium garnet core fading to a pale tawny outer edge. A tertiary nose of ground coffee beans, cracked vintage leather, slightly decayed red and purple flowers, dried black berries, a baked tar minerality, campfire smoke, and a touch of Sichuan pepper. The tertiary characteristics continue on the palate - which has remarkabley fresh acidity - and more or less mirror the nose only with the addition of more fruit in the shape of wild red berries providing a touch tartness and damson and black cherry adding some depth and richness. For what is considered a poor vintage this performed very well indeed.

Remarkable how well this wine held up. From the year prior to Banfi acquiring it. fruit still hanging on with lots of savory flavors on the pallete.

Bottled in a 0,72-liter bottle. 13% alcohol. Tasted in Barbi Brunello 2010-1968 vertical next to 1968 Barbi Brunello.

Surprisingly dense and dark, almost fully opaque syrupy-brown color. Rich, sweetish nose with lush aromas of dried figs and syrupy molasses, some cherry marmalade, light raisiny tones, a little bit of balsamic VA, a hint of Russian candy and a subtly buttery touch diacetyl. The wine feels ripe, full-bodied and fully mature on the palate with flavors of raisins, prunes and dried figs, some meaty umami, light balsamic notes of VA, a little bit of wizened black cherry, a hint of pipe tobacco and a touch of sour cherry bitterness. The wine feels still rather structure as it is quite high in acidity with ample, moderately resolved tannins that still retain some grip without coming across as aggressive. The finish is long, savory and moderately grippy with evolved flavors of wizened black cherries and raisins, some rich notes of balsamico, light meaty notes of umami, a little bit of pipe tobacco, an oxidative hint of tangy rancio and a touch of sour cherry bitterness.

A beautiful, harmonious and wonderfully evolved Brunello at its peak. The wine shows a good deal of ripeness, but also enough sense of structure to keep it wonderfully in balance even after +50 years. The 1968 Barbi didn't stand a chance against this wine, because it was so oxidative and obviously going already downhill. However, the 1969 Barbi came across as similarly impressive, showing perhaps a bit less ripeness and complexity, but conversely more freshness and youthful qualities. Hard to say which was better, this wine or that 1969 Barbi Brunello, but them both were the two best wines we had that evening. Terrific stuff.

Bought a few bottles recently in Switzerland for a song. I understand this winery was bought by Banfi in 1978, and eventually the castle where this wine was bottled, Castello Poggio alle Mura, was rebranded to Castello Banfi. In the mid 90s Banfi reintroduced the name Poggio alle Mura for their top Annata BdM.
Safe for a handful of the top producers, I am not a fan of Brunello past the 20 year mark as most wines oxidize and/or fade after peaking in the 10-15 year window. 1975 is a very good Brunello vintage but still I was expecting very little here. Bottle in superb condition which is incredibly rare for mature Italian wine. Bottom neck fill, very tight sitting cork with clean top and only bottom third or so soaked. Swiss importer back label. Pnp. Garnet color with just a touch of browning towards a translucent rim. Somewhat muted aromatics but perfectly balanced already upon opening. Very fine nose. A touch of sweetness balanced by a touch of acidity, there is still fruit, earthy notes, nothing particularly deep or complex but very nice to drink. With more air tannins appear. Short finish.
Very nice surprise and pretty much at the level of the 75 Lisini Riserva opened a few years back. Would Pnp, the wine does not fade with more air but the tannins become more pronounced and harsher, and overall not more aromatic but just less fun to drink.
Might have guessed Chianti from early 2000s blind. Impressive. An honest 89 (-)

A bit mushroomy to start but a lovely perfume and great aged sweetness. Modest alcohol, effortless power even at this old age, not dominated by any particular thing, this is why we drink old wines. My wife's fave bottle this year she says.

Extracted cork in two pieces and gave the wine some air to breathe. Another good showing of an older Brunello with all its classic hallmarks. It is just remarkable how they are able to withstand time and provide this kind of pleasure 46 years after.

Bottom neck fill. PnP with three other 68's for 50th birthdays of Pam and Nigel. Beautiful color with much less browning than expected. Wonderful Tuscan sangio nose and a good bit of body left throughout the palette. This actually out-shined the 68 Biondi Santi Riserva.

i was lucky to have a prestine bottle with wine remaining at high neck level. it actually benefits from a little bit breathing and holds up well in the glass. Initially a bit funky, then turns chocolate, coffee, tea and dried fruit, with a palate that's suprisingly rich yet lithe. I could feel the layers. Yes it quite tertiary, but full of life. I enjoyed my 2nd glass of this even more.

This was quite a surprise. As I pulled out the cork, it was clean and intact. Aroma of dried flowers were dramatic. After decanting, the color actually went from light violet to a deeper purple and barely any browning. The palate showed orange peel, stewed fruit and anise. The length was moderate but continued to evolve with new tastes for over an hour. Who would have thought that at 43 years it would have been so intense and stand up to steak on the grill

A little chocolatey at first. Really gets going after an hour in the decanter. There's leather, sweet tobacco, cured meats and tar. It is all savoury on the palate with chewy structure and a whip of crisp acidity at the end. The last glass was the best and I wish we had decanted for a lot longer. It had a beautiful core of sweet cherries and wonderful perfume.

Brunellos 15+ years and older (Moderno, Highland Park IL): nose: shows maturity right from the outset, but it also shows harmony with tones of dark red fruits, saddle leather, some soy and autumn leaves along with a good dose of roasted herbs as well. Nice depth with a feminine side to it.

taste: Medium bodied with medium acidity. There are still some dusty tannins that provide some support with a satiny feel and pretty tones of red fruits, saddle leather, some soy and lots of roasted herbs.

overall: This did fall apart after a while, but that was just expected. It held together for about an hour or two before falling off the cliff. This was a real treat and a lot of fun to drink.
